Mercedes Benz are planning to market the S 400 BlueHYBRID in 2009. They say the hybrid technology in this car has been made possible by lithium-ion battery technology they have developed and patented.

The UltraBattery combines a supercapacitor and a lead acid battery in a single unit, creating a hybrid car battery that lasts longer, costs less and is more powerful than current technologies used in hybrid electric vehicles.

The Fisker Karma is the best looking plug-in hybrid I’ve ever seen. This four door plug-in hybrid luxury sports tourer is certain to attract a lot of interest on looks alone. The Karma will use plug-in hybrid technology called Q DRIVE by Quantum Technologies. Performance is quoted at 0 - 100 kph in six seconds with a top speed of 200 kph.

Researchers at the University of Technology Sydney Institute for Sustainable Futures and Faculty of Engineering are being funded by Szencorp to create Australia’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. The vehicle is to be used at Szencorp’s green headquarters in Melbourne and could be ready as soon as May 2008.

Daimler Buses North America has received orders for 1,052 Orion VII Next Generation diesel-electric hybrid transit buses from two of North America’s largest transit authorities.MTA New York City Transit and the City of Ottawa (OC Transpo) have both ordered large numbers of the BAE Systems’ HybriDrive® diesel-electric hybrid propulsion powered buses for delivery into 2010.

The Michelin Challenge Bibendum is a sustainable mobility test and evaluation event conducted in the form of a rally program. Categories under test include acceleration, maneuverability, local pollution, noise, fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions. This year’s event was held in Shanghai where an interesting array of vehicles running on a variety of fuels fought for the honours.

A new Bombardier train has entered service in France. While not technically a hybrid its dual-mode (electrical and diesel) and dual-voltage (1500 and 25000 V) technology enables the train, known as a Hybrid AGC, to cross the entire French railway network and to access electricity from any available source.

One of the new concept cars Honda will unveil at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show is the CR-Z concept. The CR-Z is a next-generation lightweight sports car equipped with Honda’s original petrol-electric hybrid system.
