The ASPO Australia web site has a transcript of an address given on 04 Mar 08 to the Brisbane Institute by the Honourable Andrew McNamara, Queensland Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation. In his presentation entitled “Highway of Diamonds” the Minister talks about sustainability in terms of climate change, peak oil and population density.

Shell and Virent have been collaborating for a year on technology that can convert plant sugars directly into petrol and petrol blend components, rather than ethanol. This biogasoline matches petroleum gasoline in functionality and performance.

A decision-support tool developed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has been designed to help ensure that countries can enter the rapidly growing field of bioenergy industry to produce benefits for the poor without jeopardizing their food security.

Jatoil’s first shareholder newsletter indicates they are making progress with their plans to become a major jatropha oil producer. They’ve bought a controlling interest in an Indonesian company who is already planting jatropha, are setting up a joint venture in Vietnam and the price of crude jatropha oil is looking positive.

Enffue is a brand owned by Carotino Sdn Bhd, a vertically integrated Malaysian palm oil company that produces biodiesel. On the surface that doesn’t mean much to Australians but when you dig a little deeper you realise SAFF is most likely going to be rebranded to Enffue.

HSR Seeds have developed a breed of sorghum specifically for ethanol production that contains a high grains starch percentage. The breed is called Tiger and HSR Seeds are talking up it potential despite the fact that limited stocks of the seed are available this year.

The results from a study by an international collaboration between New Zealand’s Scion and AgResearch research instituets, Carter Holt Harvey and Verenium Corporation have found that there are no significant technical or supply barriers to producing ethanol from New Zealand’s softwood feedstocks, despite previous concerns that it was technically too difficult and too expensive.

The ABC is reporting that Tasmania’s first biodiesel plant has been approved, to start operating as early as July. The Macquarie Oil Company will spend half a million dollars on a specially designed facility in Cressy, in Tasmania’s Northern Midlands.

Natural Fuel has announced that it has completed an agreement with GEM BioFuels for the supply of crude jatropha oil feedstock for its Singapore biodiesel facility. GEM Biofuels will initially supply NFL with 2.5% of its Singapore facility production requirements, with supply increasing year on year as its jatropha plantation program in Madagascar develops.
